Temporarily Custom~How to Turn Dolls Into Boys, Add Freckles, and Apply Lipstick

Hey guys!  So, a few of you were asking me how I turned my dolls into boys, how I do my dolls’ freckles, etc.  And I thought that it would be super duper fun to show you how I do that so you can all copy me and make nice, handsome boy dolls.  I have some techniques to customize you dolls temporarily.  Everything is temporary!  They are all really easy, and I had a blast taking pictures of them.  So without further ado, I present you with 3 ways to temporarily customize your American Girl Doll!

1.  How to temporarily turn your doll into a boy

So here we have Ms. Paisley, her hair damp and brushed.  She is ready to be a boy!

So first, you need a clear rubber elastic like the one I have.  This is an essential for all hairstyles, and I like to use the large ones because it holds more hair and doesn’t break as easily.

Take a chunk of hair from one side of her head about this far in and about that much.

IMG_7542

Pull the rest of the hair into a really low ponytail.  Make sure it’s the lowest you can get it!  You might want it loose, you might want it tight.  It depends on how you want it to look.

Then pull the chunk we left out earlier, and use a brush to gather it together as one.  Then lay it across the doll’s forehead like so.

And bobby pin it in place on the other side.  (I’m doing a horrible job at explaining it, but just look at the photo and you’ll get the general idea.)

And here is your boy doll!  Here are all the boy dolls I have made using this technique.

If your doll has long hair, be sure to tuck the rest of the pony tail into the back of his clothes.

2.  Doll Freckles

Here is Emily without freckles, but we’re about to add some temporary ones!

You will need a marker that SAYS washable on it.  If it doesn’t say washable, don’t use it.  However, most crayola markers that I’ve used on my dolls that don’t say washable are OK.

Lay her down, and create little dots all around her nose and cheeks for her freckles.

Here she is with freckles!  Cute!

3.  Red Lips

IMG_7559

Grace is going to be the lucky lady with red lips today!

This works best on dolls with the Addy or Josefina face mold, because those molds have larger lips.  However, it does work on the classic mold, just not as well.

Here is a washable dark red Crayola marker.

Lay her down, and start carefully filling in her lips with the marker.

  1. this is super DUPER helpful! i’ve been wanting to put freckles or makeup on my dolls forever, and now i know how! do you think this would work for eyeliner? i have played clue, and it’s really fun. my dad always wins though. he takes, like, five pages of notes, and it’s really annoying. oh well! freckled dolls, here i come! watch out, world-tons of freckles, coming your way!

      1. Hey! I requested to follow your blog, but I wasn’t sure if you had seen the invite. Maybe you don’t want me to read your posts, and that’s okay too. 😂

  3. Yes! I play Clue all the time. I’m always Green. Because Green is best.

  4. This was super helpful! Two tips: for the freckles and lips, test the marker on her leg, near her cloth body, just in case. So if it doesn’t work, you can cover the mark. Also, I find doing a bun with your technique and sticking the bun into a hat makes it look better. You can cut the toe off of a sock for a hat. (Cut more than you think you need!) Again, I thought this was super helpful, and I totally agree! (P. S. I always play Ms. Scarlett, in any game, I love to be red or purple. Or black. I’m a dark kinda person 😉)

  7. Ooh! Great tutorials! I already know how to do freckles, but I loved seeing freckles on Emily! She looks adorable with them! 🙂
And Grace looks beautiful with “lipstick”, you did an amazing job filling them in! I feel like if I did that, it wouldn’t look half as good! 😉
