The Driving Disaster~A Photo Story

The Driving Disaster

I stood on the sidewalk, my hair whisping in the wind as cars whizzed by.

The DMV guy told me the driving instructor would be here by now… I thought.

My mind buzzed with excitement, I would finally be able to drive.  I thought of all the places I could go with my licence, all the times I could go out and get ice cream when I was craving some.

But then… I thought of all the times I would have to drive my sisters places.

I waited patiently and contemplated my life choices as I waited another few moments.

And then, sure enough, she came. A lady was driving a very nice Jeep, and she appeared to be in a hurry, as she should be.

She smoothly pulled over to where I was standing, and beckoned me inside the vehicle by popping open the door.

I stumbled closer to her and waved.

“Hey, I’m Emily Parker, are you my driving instructor for today?”  I pulled open the door a little farther to fit inside.

“Yes, I will be be your driving instructor, today, please switch sides so you are sitting in the driver’s seat,”  The woman looked to be in her late 40’s, and she wore a very modest argyle sweater and skirt.  She adjusted her glasses and scooted over to the passenger side.

“My name is Ms. Persnickety, but you may address me as Ms. P.  Have you read all the driving manuals, preparing for your test today?”

Read them?  I had lived and breathed them… (I didn’t eat them… that would be weird)  But I have pored over every single driving book and manual I could get my hands on.  Needless to say, I had done my fair share of studying.

“Yes Ma’am!”  I replied,

“Good, now remember to check your mirrors before,”  I glanced into every possible reflection, and confidently pushed onto the gas pedal!

The car’s engine whirred for a second, and Ms. Persnickety nodded at me….

And we started on the open road!  The wheels turned across the smooth pavement, and I had never felt so independent.

“Ok, please take a right at this intersection,”  she looked at me with approval as as I curved to my side

“Alright, you’re doing excepional so far, this course gets moe difficult as we go on, so be sure to be very careful.”

“No worries!  I can do this, I’ve done my homework,”

I pushed a bit harder on the gas pedal, and accelerated…

unfortunately a little too much.

“Oh…. you just passed a stoplight… That’s a DEDUCTION,”  when she raised her voice I jumped in my seat in shock and accidentally brought the jeep to an abrupt halt.

“Another deduction…”  she made a ton on pen scribbles on her clipboard and I mumbled a sorry as I pressed the gas pedal again.

As we cruised along through the neighborhoods, I decided to create small talk, “So.. how long have you been working for the DMV?”

“25 years.   Now keep your eyes on the road hun.”  she jotted something else down on her clipboard.

I almost said, My eyes ARE on the road, but I bit my tongue.

“Woah!”  I accidentally had pressed the brake and almost crushed a garbage can.

“DEDUCTION,”  Ms. Persnickety spoke again.

“Be mindful of private property little miss, now take a left on Birchwood lane..”

I held back a gasp…that was my street!  “Um, sure thing Ms.P!”

I curved to the left and hummed a little bit as we perused through my neighborhood.  We passed my house…. but then I heard the very sound I was frightened of:

The calling out of a young girl.

“EMILY!”  Hazel called out my name,

“Do you know that young child?”  Ms.P asked me,

“HEY!  I’m almost 13 lady!”

I looked at Ms. P shyly, “Erm… sort of…”

“Well keep going!  Never get distracted on the road,”

“EMILY!  Pay attention to me!  I need you!  I’m going to be late for the best buddies club!  And Mrs. R PROMISED cupcakes!  Please Emily, can you just take me with you!”

“No…”  Ms. P muttered as I pulled over and mumbled yet another apology, this was more sincere.

After much adjusting, we finally managed to fit Hazel into the car… much to the dismay of Agatha Persnickety.

“Please. Keep. Going.”

I nodded and bit my lip as we headed out for the second time.

“This is sooo boring Emily.  I think we need some tunes,”

“NO we do not need ‘tunes’ young lady,”

“Too late!”

The heavy bass of a popular song blasted from the car radio as Hazel reached her toe to switch on the radio.

“Please turn it off!  This is absolutely unacceptable!”

“Hazel, come on….”  I begged without looking at either one of them.

Hazel shook her head, “No way I LOVE this song!”

She began to belt out the lyrics to the particular radio songs, which was followed by many pitch squeaks and squaks, “DESPACITO THIS IS HOW WE DOOOO IT IN PUERTO RICO,”

“I am so sorry Ms. P, I honestly didn’t mean for this to happen, I really am trying my hardest!”

“I don’t want to hear it!  Just keep driving young lady.”

“You guys are no fun.”  Hazel spoke,

“I can;t believe you!  You do want me to drive you around, don’t you?  Well guess what, I have to get m license to do that!”

“WHAT you’re going to drive me around?  Nevermind, Despacito will just have to wait!  But we’ll pick up right where we left off next time you drive me on a road trip,”

“There will be NO road trips if you don’t keep messing with this test like this!”

Ms. P screamed in unison with the vehicle as it bumped onto the side of a road wall….

I squeezed my eyes shut….

Hazel slumped into her seat and opened her  mouth once more, “Did she pass?”

“Despite the fact that your sister ran a stoplight, accelerated into a garbage can, picked you up, AND CRASHED INTO A road wall, I must admit, I’ve never experienced any driving test like this one.  It was quite riveting, I must say!”  she brushed the dust off her skirt gingerly, “I think I only have one word to describe it…. disastrous.  Your driving test, Emily Rose Parker, was a disaster.”

And THAT is how Emily got her driver’s License!  Stay safe on the road!
